Did Michael Phelps Win Race Against Great White Shark?.
Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, took on a different kind of challenger Sunday night – a Great White Shark.
The shark won the “head-on-head” race, clocking in at 36.1 seconds to Phelps’ 38.1 seconds in the 100-meter race. Phelps was leading the race until the 25 meter mark in the virtual match-up that included video footage of the shark against the Olympic champion.
“They (sharks) swim so fast, it’s almost like a bullet,” Phelps said about the race. “I don’t like taking silver medals but I’ll take one against a Great White.”
Discovery Channel’s popular Shark Week kicked off Sunday with the Phelps vs. Shark swimming showdown. Shark Week programming lasts until July 30.
In its promo, Discovery promised a battle for the ages.
“They are one of the fastest and most efficient predators on the planet: Sharks. He is our greatest champion to ever get in the water: Michael Phelps. 39 world records. 23 Olympic golds. But he has one competition left to win. An event so monumental no one has ever attempted it before. The world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator: Phelps V Shark – the race is on,” Discovery said.
